Tham Lod Cave is located in the Pang Mapha district of Mae Hong Son province in northern Thailand, and it's one of the country's most remarkable caves. The tour showcases gorgeous limestone stalactite formations and ancient coffins, but the real highlight is the bats and swifts that call this cave home.

Experience the Thrill of Bats and Swifts in Tham Lod Cave

During mating season in February, we waited for hours to witness and record the sounds of swifts as they entered the main cave for the night. As the sun set and the swifts appeared, we were in awe of the speed and grace with which they flew into the cave.

The next morning, we explored the cave with a guide and were the only ones there, which allowed us to record the unique ambience within the cave. The highlight of the tour was a bamboo boat ride down the river with the sounds of thousands of bats and swifts overhead. As we approached the exit, the bats began to click and scream louder and louder, creating an unforgettable experience.
